Quick Technical Tips

Cutting Speed

Cutting speed directly affects tool life. Too high a speed can accelerate wear; too low a speed can cause friction and chip adhesion.

Feed

High feed shortens drilling time but can increase the load on the drill. Too low a feed can make the drill rub instead of cut.

Hole Depth

As hole depth increases, chip evacuation becomes harder. In deep holes internal coolant and proper chip removal become more important.

Chip Evacuation

Chip packing can cause drill deflection, poor surface and tool breakage. Watch coolant carefully in long-chipping materials.

Tool Runout

Drill runout can harm hole diameter, surface quality and tool life. A precise holder and short overhang give more stable drilling.

Tool Life

Tool life is not only about drilled metres. Many short holes create more entries and exits, so real life can be lower for the same total distance.

Blind Hole

In blind holes the conical drill point means the bottom is not perfectly flat. The real cylindrical depth and total drill travel may differ.

Through Hole

In through holes extra motion is needed for the drill point to fully exit. This exit distance can be added to the tool life calculation.
